You probably already have a favourite photo of your pet. The useful question is whether it also shows the details needed for the keepsake you have in mind. A lovely sleeping close-up might work for a portrait, while a pet-shaped pillow needs more of the animal's outline.
You do not need a professional camera. Start with a clear original photo, gentle light and a view that makes your pet recognisable. Here is a practical way to choose before you upload.
Match the photo to the product first
- For a portrait mug or framed print: prioritise a sharp face, visible eyes and distinctive markings. Leave a little room around the head and ears.
- For a full-body shaped pillow: show the whole pose, including ears, paws and tail wherever possible. Avoid furniture or hands covering the outline.
- For a particular artwork style: read that design's own photo tips. A source photo supplies your pet's features; the finished artwork follows the design you chose.
For example, the Gingham Sketch pet mug uses sketch-style portrait artwork. The Simply You shaped pillow uses your pet's pose and silhouette, so a tightly cropped headshot is not the best starting point for a full-body result.

Use soft daylight so the features are visible
Try a bright room near a window or open shade outside. Light from roughly in front of the pet helps show both eyes and the texture around the nose. A bright window behind them can leave the face in shadow.
For black fur, check that you can distinguish the eyes, nose and coat rather than seeing one dark shape. For pale fur, check that bright areas still have texture. If important features disappear, change your position or try a different photo rather than relying on a heavy filter.
Get low, leave space and let them settle
A photo taken around your pet's eye level usually gives a more familiar view than one taken directly from above. Keep a comfortable distance and avoid crowding or forcing a pose. If your pet moves away, stop and try another time.
Take a few pictures and compare them afterwards. A slightly different moment can reveal the expression you recognise. Leave some space around the ears and body so there is room to work with the image; you can always discuss a crop later.
Check the original, not just the thumbnail
Open the picture at a larger size. Look at the eyes, whiskers or fur around the face. If they are already blurred or blocky, enlarging the file will not restore the missing detail.
- Use the original camera file when you have it.
- Avoid screenshots of photos or pictures copied repeatedly through messaging apps.
- Skip strong beauty filters, artificial blur and colour effects that change markings.
- Do not crop off ears or paws to make the picture look finished.
- Use a photo you own or have permission to use.
The upload control on each product page lists the file formats and maximum size it accepts. Follow that guidance rather than resizing every photo to an arbitrary number of pixels.
Choose expression over a perfect background
A calm, uncluttered background makes the animal easier to see, but a meaningful photo can matter more than an immaculate room. What you want to avoid is an object hiding part of the pet, such as a blanket across the face or a chair leg covering their body.
If you only have an older or imperfect image, do not discard it automatically. Ask Fiorpaw about the photo and intended product before ordering. Not every missing or blurred detail can be recovered, so it is better to check than expect a guaranteed result.
